Digital Ethnography

Introduction

Digital Ethnography
is a research strategy employed for gathering empirical data on human societies/cultures created through computer-mediated social interaction. Data collection is often done through participant observation, interviews, questionnaires, etc. with the use of latest technology.

What is your undergraduate course?

So I took BS CS-IST here at De La Salle University.

How did you get involved in teaching?

Undergrad pa lang, gusto ko na magturo. Actually, I wanted to take education first kaso, inoffer yung IST. So saktong sakto for education. No problem.

Do you enjoy teaching?

Of course!

How long have you been teaching?

I’ve been teaching for three years going on four

Do you find teaching pay economically well?

Actually, hindi gaano. Not that okay pero di naman kailangan mataas ang sweldo. Its more about the student rather than your pay.

How much number of units do you teach in a school year?

Siguro in a school year, in my old job, siguro nasa mga 40 plus. 22 to 24 per semester. Ngayon kasi its trisem so I have 12 then 8 sa kabila so I have 20 in total. But generally before, mga 44-45 a year.

Have you had your personal video before when you are teaching was recorded?

Wala naman so far. First time lang ito.

How do you like the idea of recording your teaching or delivery?

Siguro pag pinaghandaan, yung talagang magtuturo ka for the purpose of recording, wala naming issue. Pero yung nirerecord ka habang nagtuturo ka, nakakaconscious. Hindi mo kasi mapaghandaan.

In terms of teaching strategy, what would you consider as your strength in teaching?

Siguro I connect well with my students. Maybe because yung sa age din. Also if I really get into a subject, talagang ibibigay ko 100 percent. I would always ask for subjects na talagang specialty ko kasi kaya ko talagang magsalita ng dire direcho. Kahit walang slides okay lang. Gusto ko kasi talagang magturo. Galing ako sa isang family ng teachers. So nasa dugo na talaga.

How about your weaknesses?

Weakness ko naman, siguro dahil malapit ako sa studyante, minsan nagpapauto. Pero I guess kailangan din ng student na mejo may nag eequalize para sa kanila. I know how hard it is to be in college tapos ang dami daming requirements. Sometimes mas maganda kung meron kang kahit isang subject na makakaease ng pressure. I’ve been there also kasi.

Do you think your student like you?

Generally feeling ko okay naman din. Being approachable to student is also a part. The only problem na tingin ko is baka pag masyado ng malapit sa studyante eh baka maisip na may finafavor. Pero I really don’t want that to happen kasi talagang lahat kayo, equal padin. Meron din naming may ayaw sakin. I always believe that there are only two kinds of students. It’s either gusting gusto nila ako or ayaw na ayaw nila ako. Walang middle ground eh. So there are really some student that don’t like my teaching style at siyempre hindi mo naman kayang iplease lahat. But generally marami naman yung okay.

What would you consider as your best teaching strategy?

Best teaching strategy ko siguro is more of the consultation type. If in front of a class, okay lang. But I don’t think its my forte. I believe that students might actually learn better if we have group of 5, tapos nag uusap usap tayo na one on one kasi mas madami akong nasasabi. And its more focused on the needs. Kasi when you have lecture, lahat yan iaadress mo. They should all be at the same level. Pag sa smaller group, mas nafofocus mo yung mga kailangan nila. Kapag kulang naman, then dun ka mag fofocus. So I guess mas okay yung strategy na yun. And I firmly believe that mas mabuti yung gumagawa yung studyante. They do it physically first. Kasi if your doing a project, mas maganda yung ginagawa mo rather than memorizing. So I’m not high up on lectures. I’m really focused on hands-on activities or any project related. Kasi nga pag ginawa mo, sure maaalala mo.

Have you encountered a student cheating? What happened?

Of course, meron. Hindi mo naman maiiwasan yan. Given na mabait na nga ako, naaabuso padin. I take it from sir Molano na hindi ka siyempre dapat nagpapahiya ng studyante. There are several ways in order to approach them. So kapag obviously mo naman siyang nahuli, pwede mo naman siyang iapproach after then pag usapan. Then sa first time, pwede mo naman siyang i-let go or bigyan mo ng warning. But the second time, talagang pwede na akong mambagsak. Nambabagsak talaga ako. Siyempre kapag you fool me once, okay lang. Shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. So pangalawang beses din a talaga pwede. Wala na talaga. I handled it by giving to them warnings at first. And also remind them na mali talaga. Its not all about grades kasi. Kasi pag ikaw, nagcheat ka, hindi naman actually ako yung niloloko mo. You’re actually fooling yourself kasi hindi ka naman pumasok sa school para iplease ako. Pumasok ka for you tog grow as a person, then tutulungan naming kayo para machieve niyo yung goals niyo. If you plan to carry that over your work, ikaw din ang mayayari, hindi naman kami.

What is your view to a cheating student?

Siguro minsan sa sobrang gipit na or parang naiintimidate, or nag uunderachieve or kailangan na talagang pumasa, siyempre may reason naman yun. Kailangan mo lang siyang iwork out. And then if nahuli nga, then kailangan lang siyang icorrect. There are ways naman para matulungan siya para tumaas yung grades without giving extra work. Parang humihingi ng special project. Pag ginalingan niya naman, kahit walang special project, kaya niya namang habulin grade niya eh. So its more of guiding the student. Ayusin man kung anu yung mali.

What is your view on honesty?

So honesty talaga kailangan 100 percent. So yung studyante kailangan talaga honest! Mas gusto kong pumasa ang studyante na hindi nagcheat at mababa ang grade kaysa sa studyante na nagcheat at mataas ang grade. So kapag ikaw nag exam kasi sakin tas bumagsak. Nagsabi ka sakin ng sorry, mas maaapreciate ko yun. Sasabihin ko ‘sige galingan na lang naten sa susunod’. And mas may chance pa siyang pumasa sakin rather than yung mataas nga yung grade, hindi mo naman alam kung saan nanggaling. But of course, definitely honesty.

Do you know the life story of St.Lasalle?

Yes, of course. Kakaorient lang ulit. Definitely kapag lasallian ka, di naman siya nawawala.

Do you follow some of his teaching principles?

More or less siyempre yes. Kasi he’s more on giving yung education sa mga students. Not only in school but also sa buhay nila. It doesn’t stop in the classroom. So kapag may problema din sila about life, I’m willing to help. It’s more of walang pinipili. I’ve taught in other schools where yung students nila are not the same as the students here in La Salle. Pero para sakin walang difference. Meron din naman sa kanilang pabaya. Meron din naman yung sobrang sipag. Di narin naman nagbabago yun. So it really depends on the students. But its more of providing the help that they need across all classes.

What would you consider as the best instance in teaching that you had? When did this happened?

Best instance in teaching is always yung pag bumabalik sila sayo after. I’ve had several thesis groups nadin also na talagang naplaplay ko yung best strength ko kasi nga, if you have a thesis adviser, talagang consultation yun. One on one talaga. Lumalabas is you’re guiding or mentoring them. And then muntik na nga lang magka best thesis yung isa kong thesis group. Sayang. Actually nasabi ko na sa kanila eh na they could be the best thesis group if they only did there survey well. Parang tatlong linggo silang kinukulit na ayusin yung survey tas pagdating dun, kulang yun suvey tapos mali. Parang saying, naexcellent sana. But after that, babalik sila sakin at sasabihin ‘sir salamat! Dahil natulungan mo kami, then lahat ng tinuro mo samin, naaapply na naming sa work ngayon.’ Siyempre the best, alam mong may impact yung tinuro mo and its not only for academics. Kahit yung sa buhay nila, nagrereflect naman eh. Kapag lumalapit naman sila sayo, alam mo naman na tama yung ginagawa mo.

How about the worst?

Meron pero di ko mapan out. Pero wala pa naman akong nakakaaway na studyante. I always try to maintain yung student-teacher relationship. And always, respect yun. Pag nagalit ako sa class, alam niyong mali na kasi sobrang haba talaga ng pasensya ko. And worst siguro yung nagtuturo ka tas di ka nila pinapansin. Of course they have their reasons. I’ve also experienced it as a student na minsan, hindi mo talaga mapigilan na kausapin yung katabi mo. And kapag nangyari yun intindihin na lang. Siguro nakakarma lang ako. Haha. So kung hindi nila ako irespeto, hindi ko rin sila irerespeto. Siguro dapat may equalizer. Pero actually the learn naman na mali pala yung ginawa nila then maayus then. So technically wala pa namang worst. Wala pa naman! Sa ibang mga co-faculties ko meron yung sigurado pero hindi na sa akin yun.

The use of digital social media like video, podcast and blogs has brought new dimensions in research strategy especially in data collection. With unlimited space, these empirical data on human societies/cultures can now be stored in the Internet and can easily be viewed by other people. With these new technologies available for us, students and teachers can now get ideas or follow sir Tabora's way of teaching.

6 Degrees of Separation Experiment

6 degrees of separation refers to the idea that everyone is at most six steps away from any other person on Earth, so that a chain of, "a friend of a friend" statements can be made to connect any two people in six steps or fewer. In this experiment we try to find out if this theory is true. We try to find some connection from random engineering students to Jason Cruz. The experiment is done within the campus in DLSU.

We conclude that 6 degrees of separation is true. We reached Jason Cruz by 3 steps.

Youtube Traffic Experiment

In this experiment we want to know how popular and reliable YouTube is as a social media facility. Another thing is to provide an opportunity for us to gather, consolidate and interpret data in a meaningful manner. Cooperation, patience, critical thinking among group members is critical in this experiment.

On July 14, 15 and 16, we conducted the YouTube Traffic Experiment. We choose a specific schedule (6:00-8:00pm) for three consecutive days. The group watch the recent 20 videos uploaded in YouTube and gathered a lot of data. Information are extracted and posted in this blog.

*The most common category based from the tag cloud is People & Blogs. People just want to share their ideas and feelings across the globe through Internet.

Languages used
*The most used language in YouTube is English. Not so much here since most of the uploaders comes from USA and English is the universal language. Some videos doesn't contain any clue of what language they are using. It's either because there is no one talking or there are no information shared in the uploaded video.

Conclusion

We can conclude that YouTube is a popular and reliable social media facility. Most of the videos uploaded are all about ideas and emotional feelings of the uploader. They want other people to know what they feel and hear comments from them. Most of these people are at their legal age.
Other things discovered during this experiment are: 1) the use of YouTube for commercial purposes like selling of real estate, 2) those bad videos uploaded(no editing, crap quality) came from newbie and haven't uploaded something yet, 3) some videos are uploaded by group of people or an organization not just by one person only.
